Sindhu Darshan in Leh Ladakh, India – Why Is It Celebrated?

Sindhu Darshan Festival is a kaleidoscope to the unique culture of Ladakh people. The colorful festival is organized annually at Leh. Sole aim behind the celebrations of the Sindhu festival was to highlight the vibrant culture of Ladakh people and popularize the Ladakh handicrafts. For the first time the festival was celebrated in October, 1977, which was attended by seventy people from all over the country.

The Sindhu Cultural Centre, a huge complex was setup, whose foundation was laid by the Prime Minister of India in 2000. This complex houses an open air theater, a music room, an exhibition gallery and a small library. Auditorium in the centre can hold 500 people at a time. Visitors can shop for Ladakh handicrafts available at the shops within the premises. The centre was constructed to promote the tourism and allure large number of travelers across the world.

Every year hordes of pilgrims flocks Leh, to have a glimpse of Sindhu river. During the extravaganza devotees conduct prayers to pay homage to mighty River Sindhu, which originates from the Mansarovar in Tibet. The festival aims on focusing the Sindhu river as a sign of communal harmony and peace and multi-dimension cultural identity in India. Symbolizing the national integrity, the festival received a warm welcome from many other religious associations including Ladakh Buddhist Association, Sunni Anjumam, Shia Majilis, Hindu Trust, Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee and Christian Moravian Church. Other cause of its celebration is to pay homage to the dead soldiers who sacrificed their life in safeguarding Siachin, Kargil and other international boarders. Apart from attending this grand festival, it's a golden opportunity for the travelers to visit the local sights of Leh-Ladakh.
