Fictional Book Showcases Indomitable Spirit of Military Men and Women
Longwood, FL (Vocus) April 23, 2010 -- Too often, the heroism and faith of Americans fighting in the Iraq War goes overlooked by the news media. But in John Cowart’s new release, Haditha Diary ($25.99, paperback, 978-1-61579-888-9), the author showcases the indomitable spirit of this country’s military men and women. This unique story breaks from prevailing Iraq War literature, presenting a comprehensible narrative about Haditha—the setting for a counterinsurgency campaign that was emblematic of the struggles in most other Iraqi towns. Although specific details of the battle behind the so-called massacre are never broached, the book does place the memory of these fallen warriors in a context that is more accurate and worthy of these heroes than is now commonly understood.
“Christian faith was an overtly recognized source of strength for soldiers and Marines in Iraq,” the author says. “Our men used that strength to topple a dictator, blunt Al Queda’s attempt to establish a Sunni Caliphate, and overcome the radical Shia Islamist view that the war heralded the Muslim Messiah’s return. Haditha Diary depicts our men and their Iraqi allies together in pitched battle. They can be more appropriately memorialized with an understanding of how they fought and won.”
As the son of a Vietnam veteran and policeman, Cowart grew up around heroism. He learned about violence as a street cop and detective. Rising from private to major in the Marines, he led infantrymen in Haditha and saw firsthand their Christian faith and courage. Haditha Diary is his first novel, and he hopes its message will resonate with all who are looking for the truth.
